Every page can load and resize perfectly, yet the whole thing can still be a chore to use.

Many businesses assume a responsive website is a mobile-friendly one, but they aren’t the same thing. If your site needs people to book, buy, log in or get in touch, that difference can cost you customers.

Responsive isn’t the same as mobile-friendly

Responsive design means a page adapts to the screen. Mobile-friendly design means someone has thought about how a person will actually use that page on a phone.

On a typical responsive site, the desktop blocks simply stack into one long column. For a brochure site that mainly shares information, that can be perfectly fine.

Functional sites are different. If people need to book, buy or log in, a long column can bury the very thing they came for. Extra images add more scrolling, and drop-downs that make sense on desktop can feel clumsy on a phone.

Responsive design is still the right foundation, and Google recommends it. It’s just where mobile design starts, not where it ends.

Case study: the Book Now button that wasn’t pulling its weight

One of our clients takes tour bookings online. Their website worked well on desktop, but the mobile version hadn’t really been considered at all.

It was technically responsive, with each block cascading down the page. Once we looked at it properly, though, it was clear that booking wasn’t easy. The price wasn’t where it should have been, and neither was the Book Now button.

That mattered because about 60% of their users were on mobile. So we took a deep dive into the user experience and made the journey intuitive for someone booking on their phone. The change had a significant impact on conversion.

The interesting part is that nothing was technically broken. The site simply hadn’t been designed for the way most of its customers were using it.

What a good mobile site needs today

A good mobile site loads quickly, makes things easy to find and gets people to what they need with as little effort as possible. These are the areas that matter most.

Speed

Speed is one of the biggest issues on mobile. Cloudflare data analysed by TechnologyChecker puts the main UK mobile networks at 47–64 Mbps, compared with 170–275 Mbps for the big fixed broadband providers. A page that feels instant in the office can drag on a phone, so optimising images is essential.

Google’s Core Web Vitals give you clear targets. The main content should load within 2.5 seconds, the page should respond to taps within 200 milliseconds, and the layout-shift score should be 0.1 or less. These are measured using real visitors, and missing just one target fails the page.

Content Google can still find

Google uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. So cut clutter from mobile pages, but keep the content that matters.

Google warns that having less content on mobile can cost you traffic. Its suggestion is to move content into accordions or tabs instead of removing it.

Menus that help people find things

A mobile menu has to do more than open and close. People should be able to reach what they need quickly, without hunting around or getting frustrated.

Forms and logins that feel intuitive

Forms and logins shouldn’t just work, they should feel easy. Typing on a phone is slow, so Stripe recommends using the right keyboard for each field, turning on autofill and offering Apple Pay or Google Pay at checkout.

The stakes are high. Stripe reported that mobile basket abandonment was roughly 79% globally in May 2025, compared with about 67% on desktop.

Buttons built for thumbs

The accessibility minimum for tap targets is 24 x 24 pixels, or enough space around smaller ones. For the buttons that matter most, aim higher: Stripe suggests at least 44 pixels and placing key actions where thumbs naturally land.

Consistent text

Consistent text sizes make a site easier to read and scan. If sizes jump around from page to page, it looks careless and makes people work harder than they should.

How we design for mobile

At Say Web Design, every key page gets its own mobile design. Having only a desktop design just isn’t enough, especially on a functional website.

Design for desktop. We create the desktop design and refine it until the client is happy.

Design for mobile. We then design the mobile version of all the key pages.

Test on every device type. We test everything on desktop, then on mobile and tablet, feeding back to make sure it all works as it should.

We can see that process changing. In some cases, we expect to design for mobile first and then look at desktop.

The numbers support that. Cloudflare data analysed by TechnologyChecker puts mobile at 53.6% of human UK web traffic in Q3 2026, and about 60% at weekends over the summer. That’s down from 58% a year earlier, but phones are still the majority.

Your own audience could look quite different, as our tour client’s 60% shows. Check your analytics before you decide how much attention mobile deserves. There’s a good chance the answer is more than it’s getting.

Try the first-impression test

Pick up your phone, open your own website and look at it carefully, as if you’ve never seen it before. Then ask yourself:

Within the first couple of seconds, can I tell what this company does?

Is it clear where I should go, whether I’m a buyer, a seller, a new client or an existing one?

Can I get to the information I need quickly, without getting frustrated?

If the answer to those questions is no, it’s time to take a proper look at your website.

Your website is your shop window

Good looks alone don’t make a good website. Your site is your shop window, but it also has to be user-friendly and get people to the information they need. Otherwise, it’s effectively pointless.

Plenty of people will look you up on their phone, perhaps while they’re out or just after you’ve handed them a business card. That’s your chance to make a great first impression, and it’s well worth the extra time it takes to get mobile right.

If your site didn’t pass the test, get in touch with Say Web Design and we’ll help you work out what needs to change.

Sources

Google Search Central: Mobile site and mobile-first indexing best practices

TechnologyChecker: Mobile vs desktop in the UK

G7Cloud: Core Web Vitals for WordPress, the 2026 guide

Stripe: Mobile checkout UI best practices

EZUD: Touch target sizes and mobile accessibility

A responsive website isn’t always mobile-friendly.
