Helpful content is important even if are an SME in Cornwall and Devon

Posted on 29th November 2023

Helpful content is important even if are an SME in Cornwall and Devon, but what is helpful content? The term ‘helpful content’ has taken on whole new meaning since Google has started placing such importance on it as a ranking factor. This change applies to all sites and not just large businesses. It will impact small and medium sized businesses in Cornwall and Devon just as much.

What is Googles’ helpful content system?

“Google Search's helpful content system generates a signal used by our automated ranking systems to better ensure people see original, helpful content created for people in search results” (Source : Google)

But what does this mean in reality when you are writing a posting content.

“The helpful content system aims to better reward content where visitors feel they've had a satisfying experience, while content that doesn't meet a visitor's expectations won't perform as well” (Source : Google)

Some of this terminology need explaining so you end up with a good result.

Content that is relevant will be helpful in Cornwall and Devon

There is nothing worse than finding a site that does have content that is relevant to the area of business or the business name.

For example, people searching for say beauty products will expect to find a site which contains content on that specific subject and not content that has very little to do with beauty products. The product/ service and the content on the site need to be relevant to what the site is about at all times.

This sounds easy but it is always worth checking it to ensure that you have the right approach. Gone are the days when a page could be loaded with keywords (called ‘keyword stuffing’) to attract traffic even when the keywords had nothing to do with the purpose of the site.

Original content will show as helpful in Cornwall and Devon

Original content means that the content must be an original piece of content and not a copy of something that someone else has written and published online previously.

If Google picks up content on you site which is copied from another place on the internet, then this could have a negative impact on your ranking since it could be deemed unhelpful.

It is ok to quote from another piece of content, you need to credit where the content has come from as shown in the second paragraph of this article.

People first content will assist being helpful

Google describes people first content as “content that's created primarily for people, and not to manipulate search engine rankings“ ( Source : Google).

This means writing content that is genuinely useful to your audience and not just a piece on content that is there to attract the Google crawlers.

The content does not need to be overly technical or detailed but written in a way that your target audience will understand. You might consider doing some research on content written by your competitors which achieves a good ranking to get ideas for your own content structure. You should also consult your web design partner who can advise you on the best way to add content to your site.

A final note is to be careful in using AI tools to create content. Google has tools that can detect AI generated content and may not view the content favourably.  Sometimes the content may get viewed as Spam.  The best way to proceed today is to only use AI tools as research but write the content yourself.
