Responsive web design is crucial even for a smaller business

Posted on 4th December 2023

Responsive web design is crucial even for a smaller business. It has also become a key yardstick for how Google sees your website and will also have a direct impact on the way visitors interact with you.

So, what do we mean by responsive web design?

“Responsive web design (RWD) or responsive design is an approach to web design that aims to make web pages render well on a variety of devices and window or screen sizes from minimum to maximum display size to ensure usability and satisfaction” ( Source:Wikipedia)

Responsive web design is now crucial to smaller businesses

Responsive web design is now a minimum requirement for every business that has a website whatever the size.  This trend of using mobile phones is accelerating so if you do not have a good responsive design, you will not get the traffic. Have a look the statistics below from Statista which brings the point across very well.

“As of the second quarter of 2023, around 95.8 percent of global users accessed the internet via mobile phones, while over 93 percent reported doing so via smartphones. By comparison, internet access via laptop or desktop was reported by almost 63 percent of respondents” ( Source: Statista)

Your potential customers are using mobile phones

Your potential customers are using mobile phone to search for the goods and services online right now.  They do this because it is convenient and easy to use and can be very time efficient.

Gone are the days when your potential customers waited to sit in front of a laptop or desktop before placing an order or enquiring. Your design needs to be able to cope with customer who want a good browsing experience on a smartphone and the ability to interact with your business at short notice.

Responsive web design should be uncluttered

The design of your site needs to have a mobile browsing experience in mind when designing the layout.  This means that the pages need to be uncluttered with clear call to actions on each of the pages.

There is nothing worse than a page that is crowded with content so that the visitors get turned off and does not return.

Remember to include simple and useful information pages on your website like contact us and how to find us. Quite often this background information is often the reason people come to visit your site, so make it easy and clear. When they find the basics easy, they will form a favourable impression and may return.

Responsive web design should have a good structure

If a potential customer visits your site, you need a design that gives that person a clear and easy to make choice. This clarity will come from the menu bar and the call-to-action buttons.

Talk to your web design partner about your web design even if you are using a template. Time spend are the early stage on the way you want to interact with your potential customers will pay dividends in the end. Just remember that ‘less is more’ is the guideline when it comes to structure and content  but achieving this takes time and effort.
