How to improve your homepage to keep pace with changes

Posted on 2nd August 2023

How to improve your homepage to keep pace with changes is always a demanding question. Do you upgrade what you already have or do you replace it entirely with a new site.

According to Forbes, the lifespan of a website is 2 years and 7 months on average ( Source: Forbes) but his will vary hugely by industry. A lot will also depend on the expectations of your customers combined with the level of technology changes that are having an impact.

Given the importance of your website to your future, you need to be constantly reviewing if your homepage and other pages are doing their job. Let’s look at some aspects that you should be considering.

Homepage content should be updated

The days of having a static homepage that does not change have gone. Website visitors are more demanding now and will expect to have up to date and relevant content on your homepage. The homepage updates may just be a heading which leads to more content in a support pages, but it will communicate to the visitor that your site is dynamic.

Another example is staying up to date with the seasons. For example, putting up a Christmas inspired homepage will not work if it is left there in January. This will turn visitors off, and they may not return.

Homepages must have a call to action

A call to action can encompass a number of areas. They could include:

  • An enquiry form about a product or service
  • A shop here button which links to your Ecommerce
  • A sign up form for a regular newsletter
  • A contact us form for any general enquiries
  • An appointment booking form

You have the visitor on your home page, so you need to capture as many as possible for follow up.

If you don’t have any call to action, talk to your web design partner and they can advise on the best solution based on your budget.

Find out if your website needs updating

Once you have looked over your website, have a look at your competitors. Is your site looking a bit dated and are there innovations that your competitors have put in place. What reactions or feedback are you getting from your existing customers about your website.

If the answer to these questions indicate a need for change, then you need to start planning for an upgrade.

Is your website in good technical shape

How does Google view your website and are there any technical issues that need resolving.

You can get some of the answers by looking at your Google Search Console which will highlight some of the possible shortfall. There are also Website analysis tools available which can look a bit deeper. You may want to involve your website partner when you do this as it can get a bit technical.

Of particular note is the page load speeds which has a much greater impact with Google than it has in the past. Make sure this is covered in any review.

Is your website mobile responsive

Being mobile responsive is now a must have for any website. If you want to get found on mobile devices, then you will have to be mobile responsive.
