Web design has to be mobile friendly whatever your size

Posted on 16th May 2023

Web design has to be mobile friendly whatever your size of business.  Mobile now accounts for almost 60% of web traffic and this has grown significantly from only 31% in 2015. This changing trend will impact on business of every size and sector. All websites have to be designed with mobile as a key part of the design.

According to Statista “Mobile accounts for approximately half of web traffic worldwide. In the first quarter of 2023, mobile devices (excluding tablets) generated 58.33 percent of global website traffic” ( Source: Statista)

Being mobile friendly helps your indexing and ranking

Because of the huge rise in mobile traffic, Google now focuses its attention on mobile versions of your website.

“Google predominantly uses the mobile version of a site's content, crawled with the smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking” (Source Google)

Having a website that is mobile friendly is now a must have for all websites, if you want to get indexed and ranked .

What does it mean to be mobile friendly?

There are many aspects of website design that will deliver a good mobile friendly experience. Remember that a mobile screen are of varying sizes and a lot smaller than desktops and tablets. Let’s look at some of the challenges.

  • Text- size and quality. The text size needs to be designed so that it is readable on a mobile. Also you don’t want to crowd the available space so the wording need to be succinct and not too long.
  • Button size- The buttons need to be large enough for the user’s finger and easy to use.
  • Menu simplicity- Because of the limited space available, the menu should be simple, and easy to follow.
  • Easy to use call to action/ get in touch.
  • Simple search function.
  • Images- Choose images that will suit a smaller screen.

These and other challenges with mobile will be familiar to your web design partner. They will need to be factored into your design at an early stage, so you get a website that works for your business.

Mobile friendly sites should be easy to navigate

Once you have sorted our everything font text size to button sizes, is it easy to navigate your website? This can be answered by looking at a few specific areas.

Is it easy to access your menu? Usually this can be built into your design so that the menus are easily accessed and always in the same place.  When you scroll down the page, the menu should remain visible at the top so it can be accessed as your visitor scrolls up and down the page.

The navigation should be clear to a visitor.  Using different colours, and fonts and artwork to draw attention to key information can add a lot to the ease of navigation.

The menus should be easy to use. This may require a simple main menu with drop down more detailed panels for more detailed choices.

Websites must be fast loading- A website with a well-defined navigation will load faster and deliver a better experience as a result. It also has the benefit that Google will rank the site higher if the load time is faster.
