SMEs in Devon and Cornwall need a good CMS

Posted on 5th December 2023

SMEs in Devon and Cornwall need a good CMS. In actual fact, all businesses with a website now need a good CMS as part of their website set up.

The scale and sophistication of the CMS will vary depending on the size and complexity of the business so let’s look at what is needed in a bit more depth.

What does a CMS do for an SME in Devon and Cornwall?

CMS stands for ‘Content Management System’ and is made up of a set of programs which will help to create and manage content on your website.

At its basic level a CMS should enable you to organise the creation, editing and organisation of content on your website. The software should work in a user-friendly manner and normally does not require a lot of technical knowledge to operate it.

Some CMS are simple and offer only basic tools but others are more complex and offer integration with Ecommerce and Social Media and SEO tools.

It is wise to take advice from your web design partner on the best CMS for your business at an early stage.

A good CMS enables regular content updates

Good content which is updated on a regular basis has become a minimum requirement if you want to have a successful online presence.

Google has issued ‘Helpful Content’ guidelines that now place a lot of weight on quality people first content that will provide a good user experience.

“Google's core ranking systems look to reward content that provides a good page experience. Site owners seeking to be successful with our systems should not focus on only one or two aspects of page experience. Instead, check if you're providing an overall great page experience across many aspects” (Source: Google)

Google also has a ‘Freshness system’ where it will reward fresh content and display them in SERPs ahead of older (not fresh) results.

“We have various "query deserves freshness" systems designed to show fresher content for queries” (Source:  Google)

If you want to deliver quality people first content that is fresh, you will need a good CMS system that allows you to easily add new and fresher content on a regular basis.

Gone are the days of just having a brochure site which does have some degree of freshness.

All in one CMS or a Headless CMS

A traditional all in one CMS will have a backend system and a front end which are fully integrated and are usually easy to use. These systems are usually straight forward and easy to use and normally appeal to SMEs whose needs are less complicated.

An alternative is to have a ‘Headless CMS’ which is defined as follows.

“A headless content management system, or headless CMS, is a back end-only web content management system that acts primarily as a content repository. A headless CMS makes content accessible via an API for display on any device, without a built-in front end or presentation layer” (Source: Wikipedia)

This ‘headless’ approach offers much greater flexibility on how and where content will appear and is suited to businesses that want content across multiple platforms.

Which CMS is best for SMEs in Devon and Cornwall

The best system will depend on the needs of your business. It is an important decision to make at an early stage when you are setting up or updating your website.

There are many systems to choose from including:

  • Wordpress- Known for its ease of use and extensive plug in which can handle website from small to large.
  • Drupal- Very good for larger businesses that need scalability, good security, and customisation.
  • Magento- For businesses that want a good ECommerce solution.
