Web design trends that matter to an SME

Posted on 30th November 2023

What are the web design trends that matter to an SME in 2023 is a good area to explore.

As with everything that is technology based, web design is constantly evolving and advancing, and these changes apply to all businesses including SME’s.

Let’s have a look at some of these trends and their possible impact on SME’s.

Simple and minimalist web designs for SME’s

Having a web design that in clean, uncluttered, and easy to follow is good news for your site visitors and good news in the eyes of the Google crawlers.

People visiting web sites expect to see a site that is professional looking with clear messaging. This needs to be supported by easy-to-follow navigation and good presentation of the site content.

The saying that ‘Less is more’ very much applies to web sites in 2023. Keep it simple and clean.

Page loading speeds are important for an SME

The speed of your page loading has become an important factor in how your visitors judge your website. It is also an important factor in the way Google decides on the ranking of your site.

Your target audience today have become less tolerant of slow loading pages and will switch off if the experience is now immediate. According to Statista regarding websites accessed on Mobile phones “16 percent of the respondents are willing to wait 3 seconds before leaving the site. Furthermore, only 26 percent of the respondents are willing to wait more than 5 seconds” ( Source :Statista).

This means that once you move beyond 3 seconds for load speed, you are likely to lose your site visitors before they even view your content.

Google also considers page load speed as a part of its ‘Core Web Vitals’ in measuring how it views your site. Google will measure the page load speed on mobile and desktop on a regular basis and will highlight pages that are either Good, Need improvement or Poor. You can see this report if you look at your Google Search Console or ask your Web design partner to help you to access this information.

It is worth spending time monitoring this measure as it will help with your visitors and how Google sees your website.

Mobile friendly design is crucial even for a SME

Mobile friendly web designs are a must have in these days when mobile use has skyrocketed.

Most traffic now is from the use of mobile phones, so you have to be thinking of designing your website, so that it is optimised for mobile and delivers a good user experience.

Keeping the design clean and uncluttered as set out above will help with the mobile presentation. There is nothing worse than a page which is loaded with content that your visitor cannot read or understand.

Content that is targeted at your audience

It seems obvious that the content on your website should be targeted of the people you are trying to reach.

Finding out what content your target audience want to read will come from several different sources including your existing customers. It is worth taking time to consider what type of content you should be adding which could include images, videos, helpful hints, customer stories and many more.

Google will also view your site favourably if it feels that you are generating helpful content for your target audience.

There are many other trends in 2023 but we have highlighted some of the areas that can be actioned by an SME with a limited budget.
